Description
This mountainous and wild region in the heart of Italy stretches from the Apennine Mountains to the Adriatic Sea and is home to the enchanting Aterno Valley and the three national parks of Gran Sasso and the Laga Mountains, Majella and Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise.
Come and explore the mix of sandy and pebbly beaches along the coast, well preserved medieval hamlets, monasteries and castles or join one of the walking food tours and indulge in this region’s genuine and deliciously diverse cuisine which is connected to the land and celebrated by the population through their dishes and world renowned wines. Places like the Peligna Valley and Sulmona offer kilometre zero gastronomic experiences and visitors are invited to stop in at local farms and enjoy wine and oil tastings, along with a wonderful selection of local products, or participate in culinary courses.
Travel to one of the popular summer destinations along the coast like Pescara, Tortoreto, Giulianova, Pineto, Roseto, Ortona, Vasto and San Salvo or move further inland to locations like Pescasseroli, Tagliacozzo and Santo Stefano di Sessanio where authentic regional experiences and spectacular scenery are guaranteed.
Visit Chieti, home to a National Archaeological Museum and magnificent 11th-Century Cathedral, or Teramo, which has the remains of a Roman theatre, amphitheatre and a Medieval Cathedral. Add Scanno, which is near the picturesque Sangro Valley, and Prezza, as both are fascinating towns steeped in history and tradition. Last but not least, leave time for the Castello di Celano, the archaeological ruins of the Fucino Valley and the highest medieval mountaintop fort in Italy, Rocca Calascio, all of which are sights to see!
The “green region” of Abruzzo is also home to a variety of campsites and tourist resorts where a wide range of both winter and summer activities are available. Ski downhill from the highest peaks of Roccaraso, Rivisondoli, Pescasseroli and Campo Imperatore or enjoy cross-country skiing in the beautiful National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise in the winter and trekking, mountain biking or water sports in the summer. Popular spots in the summer include the beautiful valley lakes of Barrea and Bomba, the mountain lakes of Scanno and Barrea and the Sorgenti del Pescara, a natural reserve with crystal clear springs, near the small town of Popoli.
Keep in mind that traditionally unique folklore festivals and events happen year round and include celebrations like the famous Perdonanza Festival in L’Aquila, the Serpari di San Domenico Fair in Cocullo, the Living Nativity scenes in Rivisondoli and the Malmozzetto medieval festival in Prezza.
