Description
If you enjoy experiencing nature and the great outdoors on foot and would like to combine the benefits of exercise with Italian culture and gastronomic specialties, there are 68 long distance trails waiting for you in Tuscany. You may choose to walk just a section of a trail on your own, in the company of a professional guide or take advantage of one of the many organized walking or hiking tours which include comfortable accommodation, excellent food and fascinating points of interest.
Among the most popular trails in Italy is the Cammino di Francesco, also called the Via Francigena di San Francesco (this trail originates in Canterbury, England) which follows a timeworn road from Florence to Rome, inspired by the life of Saint Francis of Assisi. It covers 550 km (342 miles) and is considered one of the world’s greatest pilgrimages, passing through endless vineyards, olive groves, hilly panoramas, parks and woodlands where ancient chapels, churches, monasteries and other landmarks associated with St. Francis stand to this day.
Another hiking trip where spectacular coastal views will take your breath away is only a 2 ½ hour drive from Florence. The 5 captivating ancient fishing villages that make up the Cinque Terre – Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, Monterosso, Riomaggiore – are situated on steep slopes overlooking bays, beaches, terraced hillsides and the Mediterranean Sea, with a backdrop of the marble-laced Apuane Alps. Trails range from 5.5 km (3.4 miles) to 18 km (12 miles). There are many organized groups or private tours available from Florence or locally; some include a boat ride, dip in the sea and a meal at one of the many charming restaurants or trattorias.
Whether you are seeking a challenging trek or a relaxed ramble through the countryside, Tuscany Travelist can help you find that perfect Tuscan outing that will satisfy both body and mind.
